Ford Announces New Recalls Affecting 100,000+ Vehicles

Florida Car Accident Lawyers

Ford announced recently that it is recalling more than 100,000 vehicles for various safety defects, according to The Detroit News and other sources. Ford has now issued 19 recalls this year covering 2.94 million vehicles – more than double the number it recalled in all of 2013.

Largest Recall Covers 92,000 Sedans, SUVs and Crossovers

The largest of the six recalls affects 92,000 vehicles, including the 2013-2014 Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Ford Police Interceptor, Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT, as well as the 2012-2014 Ford Edge and 2014 Lincoln MKX.

Ford says a part of the axle was incorrectly assembled on these models and may disengage over time, possibly leading to loss of drive function and unexpected movement if the vehicles are put in “Park” without the emergency brake being activated.

MSN Autos reports that the majority of the cars are in the U.S. Ford plans on repairing the vehicles for free, and owners can expect to be notified by mail beginning the week of Aug. 25, says USA Today.

Other Vehicles Covered

The latest Ford recall also affects the following vehicles:

  • 2011-2014 Ford F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles due to potential issues with the electrical junction block that could cause a short circuit leading to smoke, fire and loss of electrical power.
  • 2014 Ford Escape SUVs may have improperly cured bonds on the panorama glass roof that can lead to rattling, leaking and separation from the mounting brackets.
  • 2014 F53 Motorhome Stripped Chassis and F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles for a potential issue with the brake calipers, which may have been improperly machined and could cause braking problems.
  • 2014 Transit Connect vehicles shipped to Puerto Rico have brake fluid reservoir caps that don’t conform to U.S. brake labeling requirements.
  • 2014 Ford Fiesta models may be missing an adhesive layer on the fuel tank that can lead to leaked fuel and increased fire risk.

Ford owners can find out whether their vehicle is affected by visiting Ford.com and entering a vehicle identification number (VIN).

2014 Record-Setting Year for Recalls

U.S. automakers have already recalled close to 40 million vehicles in 2014. The previous record for recalls was 30.8 million in 2004. GM’s recall of 25.2 million vehicles this year is also a record.

The record recalls signal stronger scrutiny from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a division of the Department of Transportation (DOT) that has the authority to issue vehicle safety standards and require vehicle recalls.

The Detroit News says that three of the four recalls were prompted by pressure from U.S. and Canadian auto safety regulators. Ford opted not to fight the regulators.

The company’s decision to promptly order recalls comes less than two months after GM was fined $35 million over its 10-year delay of recalls related to an ignition switch flaw that has been linked to 13 deaths. NHTSA alleges that GM knew of the ignition switch problems for 11 years but did not warn customers.

At the time of the recall, Ford said no injuries, fires or car accidents related to the defects had been reported.
